In the world of Celtic myth, Manannan mac Lir is a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann and a fearsome warrior. A guardian of the Otherworld, Manannan is known as a god of the sea. Manannan is responsible for using the Druid’s Fog (Celtic term “Féth fíada”) to cloak the Otherworld in a mist of invisibility, keeping it hidden from mortal beings.
Manannan is said to own a self-navigating boat called the Wave Sweeper, which can grow to accommodate any number of passengers. His horse, Aonbharr, can run over water as well as over land.
Perhaps Manannan’s most prized possession is his mighty sword Fragarach. Manannan was the original owner of Fragarach before giving it to Nuada. Fragarach is one of the Four Treasures of the Tuatha. It is said that none can escape from Fragarach once it is drawn from its sheath, and none with Fragarach at their throat may tell a lie.
